Happy Geek Day!

24 May

Huzzah! May 25th is Geek Pride Day, which celebrates:

  1. Geek Pride Day!
  2. Star Wars anniversary day
  3. Towel Day
  4. Wear the Lilac Day / Discworld Day (by Terry Pratchett)

Bake a geeky cake and wear your pocket protector proudly!

I didn’t find any local Geek Day events, though Science Club is always a good haunt. Also, Balticon will be running all weekend!  Guests of Honor include author Jody Lynn Nye, artist Jim Odbert, musicians Heather Dale and Ben Deschamps and Nobel Laureate Dr. William D. Phillips.

Today, Geeks on a Train did a protest to support creating a Northeast tech corridor between DC and Boston. Called a rolling tweetup (#geektrain) on Amtrak, they travelled from DC to Boston.  Hopefully the news from this trip will be online and provide some geeky entertainment.

In England, a travel group called HostelBookers created a Geek Travel Map, using 15 travel tips from the world’s best-loved professional geeks. The Geek Travel Map includes New Zealand’s Lord of the Rings landscapes; Lucasfilm HQ and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (Smithsonian at Dulles)!

The other two nearest us are in Philly: the National Mechanics geek pub and the Mütter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Check them out and make yourself a geek bucket list!

Are you doing anything to celebrate Geek Day? Let me know!

Embrace Your Geekness Day?

13 Jul

….is apparently today.

It’s totally un-geeky, in that it is a copyrighted holiday created by Wellcat Holidays to “celebrate life and its many quirky moments”.  Ugh.  Is a copyrighted holiday even legal to celebrate? And how does this differ from Geek Pride Day, which is, to my knowledge, not copyrighted?

Towel Day is geeky, May the 4th is geeky. International Talk Like a Pirate Day is completely nerdy.  Why today? Why copyright it? I’ll take a cult holiday over this one every time.

Or am I missing something?

#FAIL, Wellcat.  #FAIL.
