Being Social: The Weekend of 3.29.13

29 Mar

Because it’s Easter in Washington, DC, there’s a lot to do if you want to go to Mass or an Easter Egg hunt. It also means that there’s not much else going on.  Here’s what I found:

All night

In honor of the Craft Beer Conference, Meridian Pint and BeerAdvocate have brought together 20 local breweries for a night celebrating local brews. Every beer line in the place will be taken over by a brewery from D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and 23 casks will additionally be available. [DCist]

The annual D.C. Bunny Run will feature people in bunny costumes that will run around for a while. It starts at Stoney’s on P Street.  Contributions from participants will go to benefit Easter Seals. [DCist]

The DC Rollergirls are having an internal scrimmage this weekend.  At 4pm the DC Demoncats will face Scare Force one, and at 545 the Majority Whips will go against the Cherry Blossom Bombshell.s  Tickets are $17, bring your own chair.

10am (all day)

The Cherry Blossom Kite Festival will be held, weather permitting, from 10 am onward at the Washington Monument grounds. Don’t have a kite? They’re sold on the streets and in the Museums for this event.

There are no blossoms yet. Don't go until it gets warmer out. (Taken in 2011)

There are only a few blossoms thus far. Don’t go until it gets warmer. (Taken in 2011)

Being Social: the Weekend of 4.27.12

27 Apr

This weekend, the number one event is definitely the USA Science & Engineering Festival!  It is “The nation’s largest celebration of science and engineering” and will feature leading science celebrities (MYTHBUSTERS AND BILL NYE!), hands-on activities, live performances, a book fair, a career pavilion and many special events. [dc.about.com]

And Bill Nye is speaking at my alma mater's commencement, too!

It must be getting to be the busy time of year again.  Unless I am genuinely confused, there are three racey scavenger hunt things on Saturday.  One is the DC Challenge, the next is CitySolve Urban Race, and finally, there is Watson Adventures’ Secrets of Georgetown Scavenger Hunt. DC Challenge appears to be $50 to enter, and CitySolve is $60 and Watson is $22.50.  I think they give money to charity and you get free/cheap booze at the end, tho?  Eh, if you like trivia and running around with groups of people, give it a go. [Eventbrite & Metromix]

There’s this thing called Maryland Day, hosted by the University of Maryland, which is kind of an open house, but also like a fair.  It lets folks use the climbing wall, play Quidditch, float in their giant neutral buoyancy tank, visit an insect zoo, and this year, meet Elmo’s creator.  There are also educational events. Admission and parking are free.  [theDistrict]

Ok, I admit I was a Pottergeek in college and might have played if this existed when I was still in school.

Georgetown’s French Market will once again be up at Wisconsin Avenue between P Street and Reservoir Road. There will be sidewalk sales, live music, wine tasting, and more. [DCist]

It’s also time for the annual Sweetlife Food & Music Festival, put on by the restaurant sweetgreen. It will feature 18 different bands, headlined by Avicii, Kid Cudi, and The Shins, and also have food from 33 different restaurants and vendors, including Jose Andres, Momofuku Milk Bar, and the Shake Shack. Tickets are $75, $125 for VIP access. [theDistrict]

If you’re out near Annapolis, why not take in the annual Annapolis Cup?  Just like in the 30 years past, St. John’s College and the U.S. Naval Academy gather for a friendly (?) game of croquet in front of a  tweed-dressed crowd. The grounds open at 8 a.m. and the match begins at 1 p.m.  [WaPo]

I grew up on Croquet. Seriously.

Barracks Row is hosting its annual Taste of 8th, which features lots of tasty samples of local fare from 21 restaurants, music, and a chance to check out the improvement this area has undergone. Tickets are 5 tastes for $20.

If you feel like venturing out to McLean, VA, they’re having a children’s puppet show / poetry slam with the awesome name of “Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs“, where can you see hotdogs that fly, an angry emu and dancing snowman. [WaPo]

The DC Rollergirls All-Stars will be playing in Sterling, as will the DC Capitol Offenders and NOVA Roller Derby. Please note, the event is BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair). Tickets are $12 at the door. [DCist]

Ongoing Geekdom:

  • April is  an entire month of pre-gaming forDC Beer week in August. You can buy a button to get beer sales all month at 15 different pubs around DC. Sounds pretty awesome to me! [DCist]
  • Taste of 8th – Saturday, April 28 from 1-4 pm when 20 of our restaurants provide tasting samples in exchange for tickets. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. All proceeds benefit Barracks Row Main Stree
  • Through May, the National Geographic Society will be hosting an exhibit that features all the stories they wrote that weren’t published!  See what most can’t, and learn about stuff like “Happy Hour at the Ochroma Tree.”.
  • Artisphere is exhibiting Elevator to the Moon: Retro-Future Visions of Space, which features contemporary artists’ works based on 20th century predictions of what the future of space travel would be.   There is also an opening reception on the 5th that could be neat. It runs through June 9.
  • The Freer and Sackler gallery will carry on the Awesome that was the Cherry Blossom festival, and features Hokusai: 36 Views of Mount Fuji!! I have to go. I tried seeing it at the British Museum, but it was travelling, and now’s my chance! Anyone want to go with me?  It’s open until June 17.
  • The Art of Video Games, which exhibits video games voted on by fans, is open at the American Art Museum through September 30th.  It starts with lectures by famous developers (many are sold out, though they will be livestreamed!), a GameFest, and video game movies like King of Kong.  If you haven’t seen it, go.  It’s so dorkfully win.

Geek Look Ahead:

  • NekoCon is November 2-4.  Apparently it starts on the 2th.  I love the Japanese.
