8-Bit Crusaders

12 Jun

No, not the crazy religious group – it’s the Cutie Mark Crusaders! Blog crossover! Gasp!

(Art by DTCX97 on DeviantArt!)

But they’re so cute doing the Mario (yes, that link has sound)! ❤

Swimming with the 8-bit fishes

30 May

Some days I swear my blog should be changed to “Geek events in DC and all things Super Mario Bros”.  Take, for example, my need to show you all this epic Mario Fish Tank.

I happen to love fish.  Add Mario to an aquarium, and this is pretty win.  I’d want a ton of algae eaters in this tank so they could chill on the ? blocks.  And the bubbles from the warp tube is also super epic.  Only thing I’d change is to make the background higher than world 1-1.  This thing is totally higher up than just the first stage!

8-bit Portal

25 Apr
Mario and Portal. Awesome game, awesome puzzles. Kind of messed up, kind of creepy. Together… is it epic?

I saw this post on Geekologie announcing the Mario Portal mashup game, and I’m tempted to try it out.  The final game has all kinds of extras thrown in including 4-player co-op, level editing, and hat options.

Too bad I want to finish Skyrim first. And then Diablo III will be out… so many games! So little time 😦  Then again, I don’t have any friends, so 4 player would be pretty hard to do…

IPL4: Gamer Success, Vegas Fail – a preview

12 Apr

Gearfuse 8-bit Starcraft is also WIN

I survived IPL4!  Although it was in Vegas, I’m sad to say I neither drank nor gambled nor had any bad food or caffeine.  I was also still sick, though I’m mostly better now.  In other words, being in Vegas sucked because it was very un-Vegas-like.  Yet, it wasn’t as if I had much time to enjoy Vegas vices.  I spent my 14+ hour days in darkness, watching insanely good gamers battle it out on the big screen with thousands of other geeks.

Starcraft 2 Final Battle by nothingstranger on DA

My review is yet to be written, but until that time, we did put up a few great pictures of a zerg plushie I made with some famous zerg gamers.  Enjoy!

Kerrigian cosplay is also win. Click for the reddit thread and gallery. ^^

Being Social: the Weekend of 4.5.12

5 Apr

Apologies for the horrid format this week. I have been sick and am now on my way to geek out at another Starcraft 2 tournament – this time in Las Vegas! Expect a post on it this coming week.

Being Social: the Weekend of 3.24.12

22 Mar
The National Cherry Blossom festival has begun, and the blossoms are already at peak!  If you haven’t seen them, they’re quite beautiful – light and airy pink, spotting the land like cotton candy.  You’ll find most of them at the Tidal Basin – that’s between the Jefferson and FDR memorials near the water.  I didn’t know this my first year in DC, and not only didn’t see any (I was looking on the mall) but I was next in line to be towed and barely squeaked out.  Lesson of the story: take Metro, even if it’s unreliable, they “say” there’s no track work on weekends while the festival is in progress.  Events are listed on their website; this weekend includes guided tours, a bike ride & cycle expo, and a symposium on the Japanese influence on American Crafts. And there’s an app!  Finally, and most exciting to me, a traditional Japanese Tea service/shop has been created, which offers lessons on the traditional tea ceremony! I really want to take those! /teadork

Other events this weekend include:

Saturday
1230-9pm
Ah, it’s that time again.  ShamrockFest returns, with its booze and youth infested debauchery.  If you’re into a lot of music, dancing, raucous and booze, good on ya!  It’s at the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds, and tickets are $25+ (you can find discounts online).

OMG MYTHBUSTERS ❤

4 & 8pm
Huh? Mythbusters Live is in town?!  Why didn’t I know this sooner!! T__T  Sounds like Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage will be running a live Q&A, and demos at the Warner Theatre!  Tickets (if there are any left) are $50+. [WaPo]

7-930pm
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will be hosting its 8th Annual Rum Punch Challenge. This features rum punches from local distilleries, restaurants, and caterers, along with Colonial-era food. Tickets are pricey, at $50 for food and punch or $100 for a pre-event VIP rum tasting. [theDistrict]

Ok, it's IPL not MLG, but it's still so geeky.

Sunday
Major League Gaming is having their Winter Championship Finals this weekend.  Not only will it be streaming live, but to celebrate there will be another One Nation of Gamers’ Barcraft at Public Bar Tenley! Feel free to watch geeks cheer on robots and bugs as they fight each other for a prize purse worth $26,000!

After moths of waiting, this weekend The Art of Video Games, which exhibits video games voted on by fans, will open at the American Art Museum.  It starts with lectures by famous developers (many are sold out, though they will be livestreamed!), a GameFest, and video game movies like King of Kong.  If you haven’t seen it, go.  It’s so dorkfully win.

Also, the 20th Annual Environmental Film Festival runs through Sunday, March 25, if you’re into earth-friendly, tug-your-heartstrings films. [theDistrict]
