Winter Holiday!

13 Dec

2007_12090006

I’ll be taking a leave for the holidays this year, and you’ll have to do a bit of looking if you want to find things to do in DC.  But don’t fret! There is always something to do around here.  Below are the resources I typically look at to compile my weekend blogs.  They should help you on your quest to be social.  Good luck, and happy holidays!

  • December 15th is the 3rd anniversary of Nerd Nite at DC9!
  • My favourite site is the Washington Post events page.  They have highlights every day of the week.
  • DC.about.com lists more things to do, and a weekend roundup
  • TheDistrict also usually has a weekend roundup
  • DCist has a weekend roundup, but it’s usually posted late on Friday. Kind of like my posts 😛
  • Eventbrite lists hundreds of thousands of events, and it can sometimes be hard to search, but I’ve found gems on this ticketing site.
  • Concerts at DAR Constitution Hall & the Kennedy Center
  • DC’s neighborhood blog, Prince of Petworth, is visually entertaining and always has events listed.
  • Events in Georgetown, DC
  • Embassy events, cultural performances and black tie soirees with the International club of DC
  • Things to Do in Washington, DC lists a lot of events, but many are things that repeat every weekend.
  • WUSA9 has a decent list of events, but they repeat, too
  • Metromix used to be good, but I find now they post more about what has happened, without announcing when these neat things were going to be.
  • New Year’s Eve – Celebrations hosted by Lindy Promo

Being Social: The Weekend of 12.7.12

8 Dec

Happy Hanukkah!  There are quite a few events in the Washington, DC Area.  Also the National Christmas tree is now alight.  It’s in front of the Capitol building.

This weekend is the last Sugarloaf Craft festival before the holidays! If you have someone that you have no idea what to get for them, you’ll find something here.  If you know what you want to get and it has to do with crafts or jewelry, you’ll find it here too.  Check it out if you haven’t been – it’s full of so much awesome stuff.  Please pack cash.  Admission is $10 but tickets are $8 if you buy them online.

Ongoing Geekdom:

  • Every Friday,at 7pm, the Black Cat holds weekly Dr. Who happy hours!! Watch one episode of Dr. Who & enjoy drink specials every Friday! /nerdchills. It’s free, and at the ‘Backstage’ venue.
  • ICE! – Christmas at the Gaylord National Resort is a crap-ton of themed, hand-sculpted ice. The theme is Dreamworks’ Shrek the Halls (/groan).  It has a slide and indoor “snow” storms and will run through January 6th.

Geek Look Ahead:

January 2013

  • January 3-6 will be Magfest, a small tabletop gaming convention gone mad with power! Seriously, they have awesome guests of honour.

February 2013

  • Katsucon will be the 15th-17th.  It’s a personal favourite anime convention of mine.

March 2013

July 2013

August 2013

  • Bronycon will be in Baltimore this year, the week before….
  • Otakon will be late this year: August 9 – 11, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD.
