Being Social: Thanksgiving Weekend!

21 Nov

via Phoenix News Times

Happy Thanksgiving!  There’s a ton to do, and free things to get if you’re not stuck indoors with family! For the weekend, I suggest using WaPo to see suggestions of things going on.  And please don’t go shopping on Thanksgiving Evening.  I support the boycott – employees need their time off, and as a past employee of Wal-Mart (the shame!) I know how hard they are worked during the holidays.

I apologize for the lack of updates – and will warn you now that I’ll be on a month-long hiatus starting the second week of December.  I’ll post updates until then, and will put up a reference guide for you to look for your own things to do while I’m out. Feel free to post here if you find anything interesting!  And don’t worry, I plan on returning with my old vigour intact!

Ongoing Geekdom:

Being Social: the Weekend of 11.17.12

18 Nov

So I was sick last week and got even sicker this weekend.  I had one prepared for this weekend, but totally forgot to post it – my apologies!

As it’s the weekend before Thanksgiving, there’s a bunch of charity events and food drives.  If you’re into that, a quick Google search will provide dozens of options for your charity of choice.  For this week’s geek and foodie events we have the following:

via Phoenix News Times

The Local Vine Cellar is having Thanksgiving Wine Week, from Tuesday 11/13 until Tuesday 11/20 between 4 and 7 pm., as we liven up the feast by tasting wines perfectly paired for turkey.

November 9-18 is FotoWeek, the annual celebration of photography in Washington, DC.  Programs include a photo contest, exhibition, gallery openings, lectures, educational workshops, portfolio reviews, book signings and more. [DC.about.com]

Through the 18th, the Alexandria Film Festival will be held.  It features films screened in and around the City of Alexandria, Virginia. (DC.about.com)

This weekend the Washington Craft Show is back at the Washington Convention Center. The annual craft show hosts more than 180 artists including metal, leather, basketry, jewelry, ceramics, glass and more. (DC.about.com)

This weekend will begin the display of ICE! – Christmas at the Gaylord National Resort.  It pretty much is a crap-ton of themed, hand-sculpted ice and kept at a chilling nine degrees Fahrenheit. The theme is Dreamworks’ Shrek the Halls (/groan).  It has a slide and indoor “snow” storms. (DC.about.com)

Also, yesterday was the big coding  battle at the Georgetown Hackathon 2012, the presentations and winners will be announced today.

Stuff from Saturday I totally messed up:

1pm

While it’s further away (Read: NYC) there will be a pub crawl for UES Hurricane Relief.   It will raise money for Hurricane Sandy Relief effort by bar-hopping for a good cause, enjoying $2 beers & $4 mixed drinks at your favorite UES bars! Plus, you get a commemorative (um…) “pint cup”.  Purchase Tickets here.

6pm

Nerd Nite is back again, filling DC9 with interesting, nerdy lectures about Deep sea robots, music on the mind, and where all those elements that make up your iPhone come from. If you’d like to partake, there’s a $10 admission fee.

And don’t forget, there’s always stuff to do on Thanksgiving weekend, in addition to a ton of shopping!

Being Social: the Weekend of 11.3.12

3 Nov

I didn’t find much going on this weekend. Being right after so many Halloween festivities, I guess that is to be expected.

NekoCon is this weekend, and is yet another local anime con.

If you wanted to move on from Halloween into Thanksgiving, what better way than to witness some Punkin’Chunkin’ LIVE? It’s a bit of a drive, being at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, VA, but it is a pretty epic tailgatingdecsturtorb event! It will November 3-4 , and admission is $10. [WaPo]

Select performances from the Capital Fringe Festival this summer will be repeated in Fall Fringe (plus a few brand new shows).  They run from November 1-18 at 607 New York Ave, NW. [DC.about.com]

Saturday there will be what could be the dangerously deliciousD.C. Half and Half Marathon.  After running 6.55 miles, racers must eat a half smoke and chili from Ben’s Chili Bowl, after which they have to run the remaining 6.55 miles to the finish. Yikes. It kicks off at Carter Barron Amphitheater (4850Colorado Avenue NW) at 8:30am, but I’d say hang out near theChilli Bowl for the best/worst views. [DCist]

Also remember that Tuesday is Election day. Please vote!  If you still are unsure, or don’t know about senate and local races, I highly looking up your local district at the League of Women Voters website.  And after that, go to one of the hundreds of viewing parties at bars and other establishments throughout the city. There will be drink specials and tons of amusing (if not irritating) commentary on this tight race!
