Being Social: the Weekend of 9.21.12

21 Sep

As it’s now fall, let’s rock out Oktoberfest! There will be a Sour ale celebration at Pizza Paradiso 1130am-midnight on Saturday, and on Sunday 12pm-“10am” tho I’m guessing it’s 10pm. [WaPo].  Also this weekend, the 2012 Library of Congress National Book Festival is on the National Mall.  There are a ton of authors, it’s best to check who is there. I picked out Jewel, R.L. Stine and Christopher Paolini (he has to be like 20 by now, right?).

If you get out of your house instead of playing Borderlands 2, here’s what will be going on in DC:

Friday

7pm

Black Cat continues to be awesome, and has been holding weekly Dr. Who happy hours!! Watch one episode of Dr. Who & enjoy drink specials every Friday! /nerdchills.   It’s free, and at the ‘Backstage’ venue.  This week is Father’s Day.

Saturday

9am

The Barracks Row Fall Festival  and DC State Fair on Capitol Hill is going on! It’ll have food, music, and activities. Officially open at 11:00 a.m. early birds can observe the Military Chef’s Cook Off.  And trust me, some are -really- good.

11am-7pm

This week’s Truck festival is henceforth to be called “Trucktoberfest“.  They’re starting Drunktober early, apparently.  Find them at the new Union Market for food, music, booze activities “&more”.  Free, but you gotta pay for the food/drink.

Apparently it’s DC flag variant weekend

12-6pm

The 17th Street Festival celebrates the 17th Street Corridor from Riggs Place to P Street and will include musical performances, artist vendors, a pet zone, and kids activities. [dc.about.com]

Sunday

11am-7pm

Fiesta DC will be on Pennsylvania Avenue. There will be music, folklore, theater, a parade of Nations, food, crafts and an informational fair. Free. [theDistrict]

2pm

For those of you that don’t like watching sport on Sundays in the fall, DCGames is hosting a game of Circle Rules Football, a fast-paced, chaotic and inclusive alternative sport that combines a huge bouncy ball with a single goal and very few rules. Be ready for a combination of running, jumping, kicking and throwing in a friendly and relatively noncompetitive setting. See a video here: http://vimeo.com/24028552.
