Being Social: the Weekend of 9.14.12

14 Sep

Pretty much everything else I can find to do is on Saturday.   But that’s fine because Sunday is football day!  On Saturday, I’ll be at the Ren Faire with the DCBronies, and will be wearing a blue wig.  If you go, say hi – I’m sure I’ll be the only one that has blue hair.

Don’t be like them!

10am

Have unused or broken down electronics? Recycle them at the Whole Foods on P Street.  It’s the right thing to do, and then you’ll have less junk!  It is Free, and 25% of “proceeds” from this event will be donated to Whole Kids Foundation.  For more details, see Wusa9.

10am-1pm

The Alexandria Story Festival features none other than books and their authors!  This year’s highlights include authors Eric Wright (Frankie Pickle), Katy Kelly (Melonhead) and Adam Gidwitz (“A Tale Dark and Grimm”). There will also be a puppet show and scavenger hunt. [WaPo]

12-7pm

The H Street Festival is also going on, and will have live music on 5 stages, “artcars”, the Baltimore Rock Opera Society, fashion shows,  food and a parade.

 1-530pm

The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art is hosting its Community Day!  This free event’s theme is “Re- imagine Africa: Eclectic Vibrations” and will have performances of music, dance, film and art. [PoP]

930pm

Once again, there will  be a Depeche Mode Dance party at Black Cat.  It’s a pretty chill event, and I had a great time there last year.  Tickets are $10.

Ongoing Geekdom:

  • The DC Shorts Film Festival will run until September 16th.
  • Every Friday,at 7pm, theBlack Cat holds weekly Dr. Who happy hours!! Watch one episode of Dr. Who & enjoy drink specials every Friday! /nerdchills.   It’s free, and at the ‘Backstage’ venue.
  • Until September 22nd, there will be an exhibit about On the Threshold of the Mayan Underworld at the Mexican Cultural Institute. Whether you are interested in their impending end of the calendar or just like archaeology, this definitely sounds worth checking out.  It’s open weekdays 10am-6pm and 12-4pm Saturday.
  • The Art of Video Games, which exhibits video games voted on by fans, is open at the American Art Museum through September 30th.   If you haven’t seen it, go.  It’s so dorkfully win.—-
  • Through October 21st, the Maryland Renaissance Faire is back! A ways away, it is still epic awesome.  I’ll be going at least twice this  year.
