Being Social: the Weekend of 8.10.12

10 Aug

While it’s not local, it’s time for the second Geekgirlcon will be in Seattle, WA! For those attending, I want a con report from you!

If you’ve been following me on twitter, you’ve read that I have been sick this week, so I won’t be going out. I’ll throw out a few suggestions for you healthy folk, though:

until 11pm

Truckeroo is back at the Fairgrounds near the Navy Yard / Ballpark. As usual, there are tons of food trucks, booze, music, etc.

Black Cat continues to be awesome, and has been holding weekly Dr. Who happy hours!! Watch one episode of Dr. Who & enjoy drink specials every Friday! /nerdchills.  The weekly ‘marathon’ started from the beginning of the new series. This week is The End of the World. It’s free, and at the ‘Backstage’ venue.

Mystery Day!

Forget the Olympics.  Why not try the Ale-lympics instead? With a few flights of beers to taste and test for supremacy, this event at the Paradiso chains sounds pretty epic to me.  [WaPo]

Along those lines, it is also DC BEER WEEK! ❤  With tons of specials, rare casks being tapped, and food/beer pairings out there, you should definitely check at least one event out. :3  The events can be found at City Paper.

Harry & the Potters is back at the Black Cat, this time with Potter Puppet Pals!!! While Harry Potter is so last decade, I’m tempted to go just for the puppets. ❤ Tickets are $15.

This week is also the Maryland Sales Tax holiday, from the 12th-18th. You can save 5% on purchases of school supplies costing $20 or less per item, or clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less.

Time is almost up! Make sure you have reservations in for:

August 15th-21st

August 17–26

Ongoing Geekdom:

  • Iwo Jima Sunset Parades are Tuesdays until August 14th, from 7-8pm.
  • The National Gallery of Art has once more begun its ‘Jazz in the Garden’ series.  This has jazz bands that play in the Sculpture Gardens and is quite the relaxing and entertaining affair.  Check it out if you get a chance!  It will be held every Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:30, through August 31st.
  • The Art of Video Games, which exhibits video games voted on by fans, is open at the American Art Museum through September 30th.  It starts with lectures by famous developers (many are sold out, though they will be livestreamed!), a GameFest, and video game movies like King of Kong.  If you haven’t seen it, go.  It’s so dorkfully win.

Geek Look Ahead:

  • Right Round 80’s dance party August 18th at Black Cat.
  • Funky Fresh Foodie Fest is an amped up Truckeroo to be held August 25th. Tix are $60, which seems a bit steep to me.
  • Eighties Mayhem dance party August 25th at Black Cat.

  • NekoCon is November 2-4.  Apparently it starts on the 2th.  I love the Japanese.
  • 9-11 November will be Anime USA here in the District. It’s by the zoo, so totally accessible. I’ve already pre-reg’d!

August 2013

  • Otakon will be late this year: August 9 – 11, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD.
