Being Social: the Weekend of 06.10.11

9 Jun

This week we have three events that the District Geek is highly enticed by (*).  Plus, there will be a ton of DC Pride this weekend.  What will you choose to do?

Friday 9 June

The National Archives is launching a new exhibit called “What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam?” which introduces a historical glimpse of past recipes, U.S. food and the government’s effect on the nation’s diet.  To commemorate this launch, lauded chef José Andrés will lecture about the history of American food and cooking with Atlantic Senior Editor Corby Kummer. This is a free event but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you miss out, Chef Andrés is also going to run a restaurant at the Archives to supplement the exhibit for its duration.  :3 Tasty!

Saturday 10 June

EatBar is hosting a Beach Blanket Bash by opening up their patio and serving 25 summer wines, and beach-friendly fare—including fish tacos, boardwalk fries, and handmade salt-water taffy. Surfer flicks, such as Endless Summer, will also be playing inside. Tropical attire is encouraged. Tickets are $25 at the event Web site; Food vouchers available for purchase on site. (via Washingtonian)

Party with the proud before the Capitol Pride Parade at the judges’ stage on P Street NW between 14th and 15th streets. Live entertainment starts at 3 p.m., with DJ Steve Henderson and performances by drag queens Venus D Lite and Blair Michaels and singers Consuelo Costin and Jenna Drey. (via Washingtonian)

Rainbows all the way across the sky...

The Capital Pride parade will be running through Dupont Circlet, 17th Street, and through northwest Washington DC.  It’s full of confetti, beads, rainbows and fun, so feel free to check it out!  Also, there will be a lot of after parties.  Anywhere in Dupont Circle should have a crowd, but I’d recommend Connecticut and Q streets to find the best.

DC9 is hosting a Nerd Nite. Tickets are $10 at Ticket Alternative.  (via Washingtonian)

Rock on, bro!

The D.C. Regional U.S. Air Guitar Championships are Saturday at the 9:30 club! This annual event has some pretty hardcore entrants and is totally worth the lols if you end up there and pay the $20 entry fee.

There will be a Depeche Mode Dance party at Black Cat! This annual event has been missed for years by the District Geek.  It is now in its tenth year, and looks to be a great as ever. Will she make it this year? ($10 cover)

Sunday 11 June

The Capital Pride Festival culminates in a gigantic street fair between 7th and 3rd streets on Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest. Spend the day gallivanting from beer garden to burlesque show, with plenty of rainbow paraphernalia to go around. There will also be food vendors, a performance by the DC Cowboys, and Dream Girls actress Jennifer Holliday on the main stage.  (via Washingtonian.  Yes, it’s a lazy geek this week)

Somehow Pride Weekend in D.C. and having an Annual Testicle Festival go together.  At this event, ‘Rocky Mountain Oysters’, aka deep fried bull testicles will be at Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria.  Along with battered balls, there will be unlimited beer, Crown Royal and country music. Woo!

FUSE – DC Women’s Pride Closing Night Party at Apex Nightclub.
