8-bit Portal

25 Apr
Mario and Portal. Awesome game, awesome puzzles. Kind of messed up, kind of creepy. Together… is it epic?

I saw this post on Geekologie announcing the Mario Portal mashup game, and I’m tempted to try it out.  The final game has all kinds of extras thrown in including 4-player co-op, level editing, and hat options.

Too bad I want to finish Skyrim first. And then Diablo III will be out… so many games! So little time :(   Then again, I don’t have any friends, so 4 player would be pretty hard to do…

Have you played this game? What do you think about it?

If you noticed, I’m a bit out of pocket.  There won’t be an update this week either, but expect an update next week!  Until then, enjoy Russian Mario by Negroud on Deviant Art!

Mario Cat, the Game

17 Oct

Ok, so this blog is looking more and more like a Mario blog.  There’s just so much awesome about this game that I’m finding.  But fear not! I’ll be finishing my IPL StarCraft 2 Tournament entry soon.  Meanwhile…

….amusing gamer/commentator tries playing through a Japanese game nicknamed ‘Mario Cat’.  This game has been out for years, but I hadn’t found it until today.   The entire game runthrough I was LOLing.  It’s epic. Please watch below (WARNING: lots of swearing ensues!).

I don’t know Japanese (though I want to learn!) so perhaps there were warnings on screen that he missed?

This reminds me of a guy commentating his battle through a hilarious mod to Mario World, where the level didn’t end after the flag… instead it was water and you’d drown if you didn’t land the right way or something…. which involved jumping off Yoshi… but I lost the video.  Does anyone know where it went?

Mario Madness

14 Oct

Daily What Geek today had two epic mario articles.  One is just win, and the other one makes me incredibly jealous of a graphic designer.

I heart Bowser.

I heart Bowser.

Although Space Invaders and Tetris blocks made of post-its have been around for decades, there has been a recent jump in window post-it murals.  Below is the most recent sighting in Seattle, which recreates THE ENTIRE WORLD 1-1.  Mario FTW <3

Holy eff do want in my window <33

Secondly, Geek weding proposals (YouTube Link) are a weakness of mine, but this couple shelled out for anatomically-correct Nintendo cartridge wedding invites.  The invites feature Mario in a tux, standing with his princess outside the correct castle.

So cute. And just like the bonus mushroom house level!

Even the cards to indicate whether guests want beef or veggies are 8-bit (although there’s no option to add mushrooms).  More pix are at the TDWGeek site!
Squee! I’m such a Nintendork <3

Mario World by Alexey Mikhaylov

Looks pretty awesome, eh?  This art by Alexey Mikhaylov sums up the next few weeks for me.  A ton to do, with lots of adventures, but maybe not much time to blog.  I’ll keep trying, but if you don’t hear from me either don’t worry, or pester me to post more!

Cook Bacon, Win Prizes!

19 Apr

Okay.  Bacon is win. But winning with bacon?! Epic!

Raw Tasty Applewood Smoked Bacon

Even uncooked, you can't deny the allure of bacon.

Instructables.com is hosting its annual Bacon Challenge, where you compete to make the most epic food/art out of bacon.  While creating your masterpiece, document the steps, then submit the complete how-to collection for a chance to win a custom-etched iPad (suck, I just bought one!) or an All-clad skillet.

I think I have to enter. I’m thinking either Bacon Transformer or Bacon Nintendo 8-bit controller.

Any Suggestions?

If you enter, please let me know!

Nintendo – My First Geek Love

5 Apr

The Original Nintendo Entertainment System

I’m a Nintendo Girl through and through.   I began playing the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System at my birth-buddy’s place.  He and I were born at the same time, but his family was more affluent than mine.  Thus, they got a NES, and I went to his house all the time to play.  We got Super Mario Brothers to begin.  Over time, more of my friends got Nintendos.  I played Castlevania, Donkey Kong, Mario 2 and 3, Track & Field, Double Dragon, Mike Tyson’s Punch-out, all three Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games and Final Fantasy (to name a few!).

Then, one Easter it happened.  The Easter Bunny left my sisters and I a Nintendo!  We were enthralled.  We owned games such as The Legend of Zelda, Dr. Mario, Star Tropics, Tetris, Duck Tales, and yes, a McDonald’s game called McKids.

What the hell kind of brainwashing was this?

We couldn’t get enough.  We borrowed games from friends.  We rented games from the video store.  My babysitter brought us games like Paper Boy, Bubble Bobble, Skate or Die! and Jaws.  It was a never ending gaming party.  I loved it.

Of course, I played outside too.  I was a healthy kid.  But I was a kid born at just the right time to live through the evolution of console gaming.

Alas, Atari. I never knew you.

Although I didn’t have an Atari, my dad did.  I have no recollection of playing, but I think it’s still mouldering in his basement somewhere.  I hope someday to find it.  But I did play through a ton of systems.  Of course, as I said, I’m a Nintendo girl, so I owned the Nintendo iterations and played on my friends’ Sega and Sony systems.  The only time I folded and bought a Sega of my own, it was the Sega Game Gear.  Not a smart move.  I totally should have gone for the GameBoy.

In the future, I may go into more detail on the myriad of systems I have played, but I felt it best to start with my 8-bit baby.

Did you play NES back in the day? What was your favourite game?
