Being Social: the Weekend of 10.21.11

21 Oct

This weekend Boo at the Zoo returns, showcasing costumes, decorations and tasty treats along with the usual creatures!  It’s at the National Zoo from 530-830pm, but if you don’t get $30 tickets, you’ll miss out! (via WaPo).  If you like costumes as much as me, you can also wear them any time this month to the Spy Museum, to get $5 off.  But of course, a certain bit of clothing must be worn to get the discount… or buy a DISGUISE KIT or ‘budget ninja costume’!

 -
Joining Oktoberfest (more places here), there will be a Beer Festival at Bar Dupont which offers $20 pitchers (though the selection is only from four beers) and German food.  Alternatively, if you care for a ‘sophisticated’ drink you can attend this weekend’s Wine Riot at DAR Constitution Hall. Tickets are $60 or less, and I have heard that it is a fun way to try over 250 wines with the younger crowd.
 -
Also, you have 2 days left to enjoy Bacon week at 3 Bar & Grill in Clarendon; and this is the final weekend for the RennFest.  Also this weekend are:
 -
October 21
6pm
The Belly Horror Show will be at the Birchmere.  This is described as a cabaret showcasing a “sinisterly sensual smorgasbord of modern belly dance, vaudeville and burlesque, inspired by things that go bump in the night.” Tickets start at $29.50. [WTOP]
 -
7-11pm
Wine Riot is a wine tasting geared toward beginners, and it comes with its own iPhone app so you can remember which ones you liked. Better yet, the wines are paired with foods from places like Luke’s Lobster, Cabot cheese and Taza Chocolate. [WaPo]
 -
October 22
3-7pm
I can’t say I ‘endorse’ this, because there are no regulations on such things, but the DC Grey Market is back, and selling homemade tasty food products once more!  According to DCist, “growing in popularity, the allure of these foodie bazaars seems to be the fact that they operate under nebulous food licensing rules.” It will be ‘hidden’ in an apartment building located at 1365 Kennedy Street NW. The entrance fee is $2, but tickets can be purchased online to bypass predicted lines.
 -
I’ll hopefully be participating in Run for Your Lives, a 5k, 12-obstacle race that includes zombies that eat your brains (ok, your flag belt).  Survive, and be rewarded, make it to the end with no brains, and you turn into a zombie.  Fail to go through all the obstacles and… well you fail, and are totally nommed.  Spectator passes may still be for sale, but registration for the event closed long ago.
730pm
For the undead lovers out there, one of many zombie walk / lurch things will be held in Silver Spring. Dress up as the worst zombie, and scare innocent bystanders!  Afterward AFI Silver Theatre will have a special screening of “Dead Snow” at 945pm, followed by Shaun of the Dead! [Metromix]
 -
October 23
It’s Mole Day!  (Well, it’s the alternate to 6.10 since we didn’t have school in June).  Celebrate the creature and the measure of unit by doing something geeky, like baking.
 -
The Tough Mudder race will also be held, since I seem to be on the fitness kick this week.  It’s known as a brutal 9 mile course that goes up a ski slope  (1250 feet), greased hills, tunnels and deep water to name a few.  It claims to “test toughness, fitness, strength, stamina, and mental grit all in one place and all in one day.”  My co-workers have said they trained years for this thing.  It makes the Zombie run seem tame… but then again, they aren’t worried about losing their brains.
 -
11am-5pm
Arlington’s Artisphere will be host to the semiannual DC Record Fair. It’s $5 if you want to get in early, or $2 from noon until close.
 -
1-5pm, 7-11pm
Wine Riot continues!
 -
3-6pm
The 2nd annual Home Brew Harvest will be held at American Ice Co. and will showcase DC-only beers!  A $10 donation is requested, and there is a homebrew workshop 3-4, with tastings beginning at 4.  [PoP]

Being Social: the Weekend of 09.23.11

22 Sep
I return, after a pretty crazy past month.  But now we can get back to weekly events update!
-
It’s the Autumnal Equinox Friday!  Set an egg on its top and enjoy the cooler weather.

(via Beer Tripper)

Autumn also means Oktoberfest: There will be literally hundreds of celebrations, so please don’t take my listings as inclusive, and if you find any that look great, please let me know!  This week’s highlight will be the Oktoberfest at Old Europe, which hosts a party reminiscent of one in Munich.   Beer can be purchased at $5 for a stein, $7 for a half liter and $13 for a liter. Their menu includes lots of wursts and other German specialties.  I think I may need to check this out.  Anyone?

If Oktoberfest wasn’t enough, keep in mind that the Ren Faire is still going on.  In addition, the National Book Festival will be held this weekend on the Mall.  This event hosts tons of authors (including graphic novelists!)  as well as sales, readings, autographs, and a ton of things to see and do.  Hopefully it isn’t rained out!  Finally, it’’ also DC Fashion Week, for those of you that care about higher beings’ clothes choices.

Euro-pean ahhahahah

Friday
630-1130pm
Euro Night 2011 at the Embassy of France will occur, where all the European nations show off food, outfits, and music of their homelands.  Admission is $35 and it’s a bit out of the way, unless you are a Georgetown student ;P (Via Metromix)

Saturday
11am-7pm
Tour de Bierre will be held at the Wonderland Ballroom, Room 11, Red Rocks, Meridian Pint and the Getaway.  If you like draft New Belgium beers, you can get a beer passport, visit the checkpoints, and get a stamp when you order any New Belgium draft. If you catch them all, you could win fabulous prizes!  Or else, just enjoy the beer.  I don’t know all of these, but Meridian is meant to be pretty good.  I’d say it’s worth a venture! (via WaPo)

(via United Nations of Beer)

12-6pm
Das Best Oktoberfest at the National Harbor claims to be a blowout party.  Look for all the normal stuff, as well as a daily ‘Best Beer Belly’ competition and free beer if you dress the part.  Tickets range from $25-85.  Choose wisely. (via Metromix)
-
2-10pm
Yep, Blacktoberfest, held at the Navy Yards Park.  Apparently it was also held last year, but I don’t recall it being a big deal.  This year boasts more music and a Nats game after party.  Unfortunately, it’s also a pay-to-attend party with tickets costing $10-$30, while VIP passes are $40-$80 (looks totally not worth it).  (via Metromix)

Yes, I'm a football geek, too

Sunday
Football is back, and a lot of bars are hosting happy hours. If you’re looking for a place to root your home team, there is a bar for every one!  The 51st State Tavern is great for NY teams such as the Giants and the Jets, and there is a small faction of Bills Fans in the upstairs bar.  My Bills buddies hang out at the Laughing ManBayou is host to Saints fans, and 49ers can meet at the Town Tavern in Adams Morgan, to name a few.  And if you’re unfortunate enough to be cheering the 2-0 Redskins, any bar in DC will have their games on.

Other than that, I have no idea what Sunday will bring.  Good speed!

Being Social: the Weekend of 08.19.11

18 Aug
This weekend signifies the end of DC Restaurant Week and the beginning of Alexandria Restaurant Week! Keep trying new venues, and let me know what you find!

Friday
1pm
Bikers will be back in town to honor 9/11 victims.  Of course, that means that there will be road closures Friday afternoon.  Check WTOP for the latest and try to avoid (or watch) the 15 mile stretch of hog movement.

via Focus on the Beer

4pm
To continue DC Beer week, Rhode Island’s Trinity Brewhouse will be featured at the Capitol Longue.
-
Saturday
13:30am
Um.  How about a Balsamic vinegar tasting party? You must pre-register and pay $25 but who knows.  It sounds pretty crazy. (via WaPo)
2pm
Finally, the time of Hop Fu is upon us!  It’s free, and at the SI Freer Gallery.

via Pulpfactor

6pm
Want Zombies? Survive Alexandria is back.  It’s a massive tag game, involving survival kits, parkour and, of course, the undead. (Apparently this year’s virus was spawned by Justin Bieber.)  It’s $25 and attendance does have a cap, so check it out now if you want to participate!* (via Metromix)
-
Sunday
Noon-6pm
There will be a Cambodian Day festival at Ben Brenman park in Alexandria.  To be honest, I have no idea what Cambodia is all about, so it might be fun to get some exposure there.
2-10pm
Not that I like hip-hop, but the U Street corridor has had a lot of development, and a bar crawl down U Street may be the best way to find new haunts.  Admission is only $5 for a pass for six bar entries and food and drink specials.

Also, heads up! The MLK memorial is set to be dedicated next weekend, so the tourists will be en masse once again!  Events start Monday, and a full schedule can be found on dedicatethedream.org.

via Pulpfactor

*If you want a longer race type of zombie encounter, I am toying with participating in Run For Your Lives, an obstacle race with zombies on October 22nd outside of Baltimore.  Let me know if youd like to go too!

Being Social: the Weekend of 08.12.11

12 Aug

OMG DCist PWNS!

Mainly due to DCist’s awesome graphic, I’m linking to voting on the name of the Farragut virtual Metro tunnel crossing.  On the topic of oxen and game, through Sunday, the Arlington County Fair will be held at the Thomas Jefferson County Center.  The competitive exhibits cover a wide range of foods and crafts, including hotly-contested vegetable competitions.  (via the Ode Street Tribune)

Friday
11am – 11pm
Truckeroo returns to the Navy Yard Metro, showcasing a plethora of local food trucks and extended hours. Let the gluttony begin!
6pm
Another local brewery, 3 Stars, is tapping its first casks of BW Rye, “a dry-hopped ale with spicy rye” at Meridian Pint tonight. (via WaPo)
10pm-3am

B&K’s Egyptian Kings and Queens Party on Friday August 12th at Rio’s Nightclub.  I have no idea how fun it will be, but they say to come in costume.  Could be some epic people watching!  Metromix has details on a discount RSVP admission.

Saturday
11am-7pm
The Alexandria Irish Festival appears to celebrate the half year point to St. Patrick’s Day by having parades, dance troupes and beer.  This street festival will be held at the Waterfront Park in Alexandria. (via WaPo)
12-3pm
If you want an overdose of opinionated loose women, there will be a Slut Walk on the National Mall.  Allegedly it’s meant to raise awareness to “Rape Culture and Victim Bashing”. (via Metromix)
2pm
One of my hometown favourites, the Great Lakes Brewing Company is starting to become popular in DC!  Have a taste at Churchkey!
6:30pm

Get your geek out! DC9 will be hosting a Nerd Nite lecture. Admission is $10, though.

Sunday
This is the start of DC beer week, so expect a ton of events during the week. Most can be found at Metromix and dcbeer.com .

(via YoursForGoodFermentables)

5-9pm

Go on a Craft Beer Cruise , where two dozen beers will keep you company.

6pm

Sail some Heavy Seas at the Iron Horse!

7-9pm

Meridian Pint continues its awesome with a beer and cheeses tasting.

Finally, starting Monday, it will also be DC Restaurant Week! Hundreds of restaurants have cheap fixed-price 3 course menus to choose from. Please go to at least one – it’s a great way to check out places near you, as well as to explore new and exotic cuisine!

Being Social: the Weekend of 07.15.11

14 Jul
Woohoo! If you like savory, rich dishes that go well with beer, you’ll want to partake in Belgian Restaurant Week, which starts Friday! Also this weekend, we have:
-
July 15
-
10am & 3pm
If you love treasure hunts and delicious foods, Roadside Food Projects will be foraging for edible plants along Mt. Pleasant streets. For the afterparty, The Gibson will have Foraged cocktails from 7 to 9:30 PM. Tickets are $15 for the tour and $60 for the cocktail event. (via Washingtonian)
-
11am-11pm
Truckeroo II will again be held at the Navy Yard, this time with extended hours.  If it’s anything like last month’s, there will be no food by the time dinner rolls around, though they should still have live music and beer.  Admission is free, and I recommend the PORC truck.
830 to 1130pm
Those Dandies & Quaintrelles are up to no good again, this time going on a White Night Full Moon Outing.  A pack-your-own picnic will take place afterwards. The event is free, but riders must register. (via Washingtonian)
-
July 16
-
12-5pm
There’s not much going on, but the guys that are doing the city foraging are also having a Farm-to-Street party on Saturday.  Of course, you have to pay to get in, so it kind of doesn’t do it for me.
-
July 17
1130am
If you’re not geek enough to see Harry Potter at midnight tonight, or Friday night… or Saturday night… the crazy WAKA guys bought out a theatre and you can join the viewing party.  You get 2 beers and will watch the movie with the DC Kickball peeps if you care to join. (via Metromix)
-
 1-6pm
Thrift store blogger Quarter Life is vintage hosting a pop-up shop at the Dunes. Pretty People owner Annie Lee will be bringing along some of the boutique’s merchandise. Drinks will be available for purchase at the bar! (via Washingtonian)

Being Social: Thursday Antics

12 Jul
Wtf, apparently Thursday this week is the party night:

Oui, oui!

The major party of the night is the French Bastille day, which gives DC an excuse to party thanks to its French rootsDC’s Metromix came through once more, with a pretty long list of parties that you can attend.  Most involve booze, French maids, and dancing.
-
And if drinking with wild, dangerous animals is more of your thing, again this year FONZ is hosting a Brew at the National Zoo from 6-9pm.  Tickets are $65 and they will sell out, so pick them up now if you’re interested (and invite me)!

Being Social: The Weekend of Friday the 13th of May

12 May

I absolutely love Friday the 13th.  As a kid, I’d have slumber parties and watch horror movies with my friends.  Now, I just like to find a fun place to party.  Of course, I am having bad luck finding -any- Friday the 13th parties in DC this month, so if you know of any, please let me know!  Otherwise, here’s what’s going on this weekend in the District:

Weekends Starting May 7 through June 5th
10am – 5 pm
The Virginia Renaissance Faire! This started last weekend, and my apologies for not posting an update then. Tickets are $9 and it is hosted at a winery, so much imbibing should be had!
May 14th &15th
1pm both days
4th Annual Wine & Food Festival at the National Harbor, which will have over 150 different wines, beers, and spirits, as well as live music.  Tickets start at $35 per day; $65 for both days. Designated driver tickets are also available for just $25. You can buy tickets online here.
12 p.m. – 4 p.m on the 15th
The D.C. Taco Experiment, an amateur cook-off involving D.C.’s finest home chefs. Dishes will range from savory to sweet and will highlight the glory that is the taco. Best of all, anyone can compete and/or attend this event being held at The Rock and Roll Hotel! Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
5pm Sundays and 8pm Mondays
Wii Nights at The Front Page – Ballston‘s back bar.  It’s free, but it’s on a first-come, first-served basis!  Unfortunately, it’s just the simple sports pack of  Wii bowling, golf, tennis and baseball.
